Battersea power station – Phase three

The Battersea power stations ongoing development unveiled their latest plans last week for the third phase of the scheme. This stage unveiled the development of 1,300 homes along with 350,000 sq. ft. of retail and restaurant space at the power station. This part of the scheme was developed by architects Gehry Partners and Foster and Partners who will developing their first scheme within London. They have previously been involved in the Guggenheim in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

This stage of the development will see a new high street being developed onto the 42 acre site, leading away from the new Northern Line tube link and into the development itself, this is to be named The Electric Boulevard. The housing will be spread across the development with in two separate zones along with a 160 bedroom hotel and 103 affordable homes.

To the east of the Electric Boulevard will be ‘Prospect Place’ which will be home to double heighted retail units at street level, a community park and will house half of the planned residential units, this side of the development will be anchored by the previously designed ‘Flower Building.’

To the west of the Boulevard, Foster and Partners have designed the ‘skyline’ which will line the boulevard and create a unique building profile. This will again home two further floors of retail and be designed in a way to allow for light to shine onto the public spaces below. Finally on top of the building will be home to the new largest roof top garden in London and will be more than a quarter of a kilometre long with views stretching towards the City. This will also house the other half of the housing along with a medical centre and another hotel.
