Combating ‘holiday mode’ the right way – tips for keeping motivation high throughout the festive season

One minute you’re juggling multiple deadlines and workloads, the next minute the end of the year is approaching and everyone is winding down for the holidays. Clients and members of staff are going on leave and projects are being put on hold; employees are coming to work battling hangovers and ‘holiday mode’ has set in.

Motivation evaporates, quality of work decreases, and productivity takes a nose dive, which can have a hugely damaging effect on a business. Luckily, unlike other quiet phases which can come out of nowhere, the Christmas period can be planned for, and there are several simple things you can do to manage the holiday lull so motivation doesn’t bottom out, even when things are quiet over the holiday season.

Re-evaluate your marketing strategies

Spend downtime devising strategies and planning for your next big project. This will bring the team together and focus energy and motivation on looking forward and continuing to push for success in the long term.

Get out!

Downtime is also the perfect opportunity to get away from the desk. Not only does something as simple as a 15-minute walk every do wonders for physical health, research has also shown that regularly going for a walk can also help with motivation and creativity – perfect for maintaining productivity on slow days.

Conduct training

Quieter periods are an ideal time to implement new training programmes and brush up on skills. Team-based training is particularly great at this time of year, as it will bring staff together and make improvement and productivity a shared goal.

Look forward

Start the next year on the right foot by looking ahead to what the organisation wants to achieve in the coming months. Spend some time brainstorming as a team how these goals can be reached together.
