Four ways to have more fun in the office

In every organisation it’s vital to cultivate a good workplace culture — this helps you attract and retain the best talent and get the most out of your employees. Nowadays, more and more companies are coming to appreciate the benefits of an office culture that values fun as well as KPIs. Indeed, encouraging employees to have more fun at work has been shown to boost creativity and productivity, and firms are increasingly designing their spaces to offer fun and playful ways of interacting and socialising.

Here are a few features you could incorporate into your office design to make the space more fun and create an environment that employees want to be in every day:

1. Fun facilities or activities spaces

Perhaps the best known of this type of feature is the slide made famous by Google. Not only would a slide add a playful element that would undoubtedly provide lots of entertainment in the office, it would also position your company brand as on-trend and cutting-edge.

If this is a little far out for your office or brand, other features such as treadmills, plush breakout spaces or even playful décor in some areas can help imbue the office environment with a welcome sense of fun.

2. Bar

Prompt socialising and reward your employees’ hard work with a great office bar. Not just for boozy Friday evenings, it could sell tea, coffee and other soft drinks, making it a welcoming space for team members to socialise and have fun even on a school night. It would also be an ideal location for hosting regular social events — like an office pub quiz!

3. Games

While some of the office big guns like Facebook have entire rooms dedicated to entertainment, it’s also possible to bring some games and playful dynamics into the office itself. Ball pits, Lego, nerf guns, ping pong, air hockey and pool are just a few examples that tend to prove very popular with employees and help to foster a sense of fun in the workplace.

4. Outdoor activities

Combining playtime and exercise is a great way to inject some fun into the office dynamic and improve employee health at the same time. If you have the space, outdoor features such as basketball courts, tennis courts or nice grassy areas are great for the summer, but even interesting walkways and pathways between buildings can give employees a little fun time as they walk between meetings.
