The insurer Hiscox has announced the company that has been appointed to build its new offices in York.
The news of the £19-million offices has been welcomed by the city of York, which will be able to boast Hiscox’s largest offices outside the UK capital.
The company chosen to build the four-storey offices is BAM Construction, a company familiar with other York and Yorkshire high-profile projects, and the plans were drawn up by architects MAKE. The offices will be a modern, concrete-and-glass, bright and airy aesthetic building, which it is hoped will become landmark offices in the northern city. The company claims that 500 jobs will be created at its 50,000 square-feet site, which was given planning permission in 2013.
BAM’s local projects and clients include Network Rail’s £27-million York site, the University of York and York Racecourse. Hiscox said as part of their announcement that the shared values as to safety, enthusiasm, and the construction firm’s expertise were key reasons behind the appointment of BAM to the project.
The insurer has set up a webpage dedicated to the new construction, including artist’s impression images, local and community development plans and the sectors of the company that will be occupying the new building and the potential jobs available. The site outlines the public space and cycle route that will link the building on Hungate to the rest of the historic city.
Of the chosen location, Hiscox explains: ‘We looked at a selection of quality locations across the UK, but York really stood out to us due to its combination of excellent infrastructure, well educated workforce and quality of life.’
