Scandinavian sustainability - Morgan Pryce

Scandinavian sustainability

The UK arm of Sweden’s largest construction company, Skanska, has been awarded a construction project by the developer Helical Bar in respect of Creechurch Place in London, the site previously being called One Mitre Square. The agreement will see the commercial development worth £87 million to the Scandinavian company. Helical Bar intends to use the building, when completed, as its London headquarters.

The multinational Skanska’s input will extend to the mechanical and electrical engineering, the construction and the installation of services and the company intends that the building will achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating upon completion. BREEAM is the method of assessing the extent of the sustainability of a building in terms of construction, design and operation.

The Creechurch Place development will extend over 21 storeys and will provide 85,000 square feet of office space. Skanska will be responsible for the construction, mechanical and electrical engineering and installation of services within the main plant rooms, and work is due to commence in August, lasting for two years. The building will be constructed in a ‘T’ shape and the architect is Sheppard Robson.

The UK arm of the company, Skanska UK, reported £1.2 billion of revenue in 2013 with 5,000 employees, and it is highly involved with PPPs and PFIs – public–private partnerships and private finance initiatives, respectively, which are particularly common in the UK now, especially in terms of school and hospital construction.

The company operates a ‘zero’ tolerance in its code of conduct in relation to several areas, including ethical breaches, defects, accidents and environmental incidents. Skanska UK has been awarded the Crossrail Paddington Station project, amongst other UK-wide projects.

Creechurch Place is in the City of London, with Aldgate the nearest Tube station.
